REVERSE APPLIQUÉ WITH NO BRAKEZ by Jan Mullen
Beep beep!
Reverse applique switches direction when I come near.
It's a technique that is traditionally associated with various ethnic
cultures, often created with multiple solid coloured layers and
intricate stitchery. On the ride I take, we dissect its main
elements - the secret layer, top layer, and the applique itself
- then continually change gears to create pieces of unlimited styles.
Choose a design and learn to cut confidently through the top layer
to the secret layer. Applique in a choice of styles
by hand or machine.
It is a technique with tremendous applications so no two students
need to work in the same style.
- Classes geared to all levels.
- Notes supplied.
- Reverse Applique with No Brakez is the recommended
text.

REVERSING WITH L PLATES
This class is an introduction to working Reverse Applique
in Stargazey Style.
We will discuss a multitude of styles, techniques, possibilities
and applications before starting to work on individual projects.
This class works either as a techniques class where students
may choose to make a few small samples or as a project class
where they may use their new knowledge to start a larger project.

FROM BALTIMORE
TO FREO
Baltimore is renowned for intricate applique.
Fremantle is known for its casual lifestyle.
In this workshop both worlds collide as students learn how
to take the simple design elements of traditional Baltimore
applique and work them creatively into a contemporary Stargazey
Style reverse applique.
Working initially on their raw edged machine stitched block
with a wonderfully surprising secret layer, students
may then choose to machine applique freehand or cover up the
raw edges using programmed machine stitches.
The lightly stitched raw edges may also be covered with hand
stitching to create a deliciously primitive look. Embellishments
and embroidery can also make the journey last even longer.

REVERSING TO COVER
We work here at combining the functional with the decorative
- Cut Loose pieced blocks with Reverse Applique images or
text.
Working on quilts that function as snuggle or bed quilts well
look at some simple skewed traditional blocks
that are easily pieced as the top or secret layer.
Well then work in a designated area - border, central
panel or filler blocks - to execute simple designs by hand
or machine. It could be personalising with a name, it could
be cutting out simple graphic circles - such fun!
- Cut-Loose is also a recommended text.
- 2 day workshop
Day 1 - Turn Cut Loose blocks into a quilt top
Day 2 - Reverse Applique component |
