...and many more references to my patterns, fabrics, quilts and
books in other publications.
Jan Mullen...exciting bits
March 2007
I have been making quilts since 1991, initially in a traditional
style for the family beds, but with the quick realisation that Id
finally found my medium, I have gone about eagerly developing my
own style and methods.
Since starting Stargazey Quilts in January 1996 my teaching and
business skills have developed at a very fast rate also. Working
freelance at a local quilt shop led me to present new patterns and
techniques every term, which I then proceeded to self publish. Since
late 1996 I have wholesaled a continually increasing and refined
pattern range.
Launching Stargazey Quilts onto the world market at Quilt Market
in Houston in October 1998 was the BIG step, and attending every
Quilt Market since, has presented me with many options and a great
knowledge of the industry.
Cut Loose Quilts, a book about traditional blocks
with a quirky spin, was published by C&T in 2001. Reverse
Applique With No Brakez made its appearance in 2003, putting
an unexpected spin on this under-used technique. Book number three,"Free
& Eazy Circles" approaches foundation piecing in a my
usual unusual manner.
Designing fabrics for Marcus Brothers has also played a big part
in refining my work and keeping me busy. In my initial two years
of designing fabrics over 50 individual prints and many colourways
of each were in production - and the count is ever increasing
to the stage where I have lost count.
A suprising joy in my life is teaching. Travelling to the USA,
Europe and other places and revelling in the education of creative
quilters has become almost as important as the design process
for me. My patterns and my teaching style both encourage input
of and individuality in my students so that my samples are often
only the starting point of anothers inspiration. Informal lessons in
colour, design and the freedom of breaking traditional patchwork
rules have students unaware that they are really working in the
field of art and design.
With over ten years in the quilting industry as Stargazey Quilts
I am taking time to relish
my past acheivements and to plan for the next ten. 2007 is the
year I will be taking some time away from travel and producing
new product - time to spring clean, recharge and run down a few
new paths.
