APPLIQUEZ
There are some words that strike fear into many quilters. One
is the 'D' word - design. Another is the the 'A' word - applique.
I am here to alleviate the fear of both words and impower all.
In choosing one of these workshops we'll have students cutting,
arranging and stitching fabric down in enlightening and non threatening
ways.
Based initially on the Stargazey Quilts series of APPLIQUEZ patterns,
I have continued from this popular class with topics of contemporary
styling.
As a process this style of applique is rather simple - we cut
shapes from pre-fused fabrics which are then arranged on blocks
and, when they are balanced, we fuse.
Reminiscent of kindergarden work it is, in fact, a way
to learn practical applications of design in a non threatening
setting. Students learn to create in their own unique style -
finicky and detailed, bold and brash- within the different
parameters of each class.
For those experienced in hand Applique these classes offer an
opportunity to relax and work in a different and more immediate style.
- Individual tuition given on colour and design relevant to students
needs.
- All levels.
- Notes/ patterns/templates supplied as necessary.
Choose from five options:

APPLIQUEZ BALTIMORE STYLE
Based on the Stargazey Quilts series of APPLIQUEZ patterns
we will use a large variety of my pre-cut template shapes
to cut out prefused fabrics. These pre-fused shapes will
be arranged on four 'blocks' and, when the four excite and
balance, we fuse.
On day two, depending on individual desire, we move onto finishing
raw edges by hand or machine using a variety of threads and
techniques OR decorating borders and piecing. Both topics
will be covered.
Students should have four blocks fused and ready to stitch
by the end of day one.
Be warned - we have had stunning results from all skill
levels!
1 or 2 day workshop.
Day 1 - intro to fusing and developing your own style,
most of the day will be spent cutting and fusing
Day 2 - stitching the edges, embellishing, perhaps piecing
and decorating the borders

COOKIE CUTTER QUILT
Using basic shapes sourced from cookie cutters (mine or yours)
we will use these as a starting point for some repeat
pattern designs.
On a variety of blocks/backgrounds, we will play with colour,
size, fabric choices and repitition. We'll enhance the
shapes, explode or split them and perhaps combine them.
Our "cookies" will be fused one block at a time.
A
quilt of your required size and design will be on its way.
Blocks may be seen as representing different fabrics in
a quilt design.
1 or 2 day workshop
Day 1 - incremental intro to design, most
of the day will be spent cutting, arranging and fusing
Day 2 - stitching the raw edges, embellishing, perhaps piecing the blocks (dependant
on your project) |

FUZZY FELT PICTUREZ
Remember back to when you loved playing 'fuzzy felt'
images - simple shapes you arranged to tell a new story
every day? Taking my love of vintage childrens book imagery,
I have compiled a library of "sihouette" shapes
that we can use with pre-fused fabrics to recall that look.
We will work on background/blocks/panels and spend time
cutting and rearranging before we fuse. Come away with
a panel that can be made into a cushion or several that
will combine to form a whimsical quilt infused with your
style.

PRIMITIVE PORTRAITZ
This is for those who have a hankering to work template
free, quickly and in a primitive style. Working from a stack
of pre-fused fabrics we will cut free-hand (no templates!),
adding minimal details until our solo portrait, or family group,
(complete with pets?) is ready for fusing.
Portraits may be based on photographs but they will be stylised/cartooned
into something of humour and delight with perhaps only hints
of recognition.
We will work on background/blocks/panels and spend time cutting
and rearranging before we fuse. Come away with a panels that
will combine to form a whimsical quilt.

KIDS ART TO QUILT ART
Using a child's drawing or painting as our starting point
we will work out the best approach to turn it into an heirloom
piece. The processes involved will be adapted to suit each
students design, fabric and capabilites. Techniques that
may be covered include machine and hand applique, machine
and hand reverse applique, machine and hand embroidery,
machine piecing and embellishment.
Use this as a wall piece or as a starting point for a larger
personalised 'story' quilt.
We acheive brilliant results that remain true to the young
artists vision. Don't be surprised if they consider this
combined effort as the best quilt ever!
1 or 2 day workshop.
Day 1 - relevant design & techniques, work out plan of
attack, get stitching.
Day 2 - continue stitching, border, finishing, quilting techniques
covered as needed.
