Tartanz

Tartanz Teaching Notes

*You must decide initially whether to demonstrate from one to six blocks.
Demonstrating Block 1 will get them started, Block 2 will reinforce and advance their understanding.
If time is available Blocks 3 and 5 offer a twist on the techniques and they, in turn, are extended in Blocks 4 and 6.

*Length of the strips will vary from person to person. I cut my strips from 1/2 yard cuts, then cut to size as needed. Some students prefer to work with predetermined lengths - 14” is usually long enough for any block.

*Width of the strips will vary from person to person. I cut my strips from 1/2 yard pieces, then trim to size as needed. My taper, from approximately 1” to 2” is spread over that length. A shorter length will give a stockier strip. If students aren’t getting the look that they want it will probably be the width and/or taper of their strips.

*The strips’ placement can be changed at will. They can be moved, extra strips can be added and strips can be omitted. Make sure that the backgrounds remain at block size or make allowance for changes.

*Colour is a big issue. Strips can get lost if there is lack of contrast. The quilt can be too busy if too many unrelated colours and fabrics are used. Keep track of the look each student is seeking.

*Backgrounds can be boring or busy unless the fabric mix is correct. Stress that sample blocks must be made to see how the fabrics work in your block of choice. Sometimes the effect is surprising.

*Baskets of strips work well in class. Your store may even prefer to supply baskets of pre-cut strips and squares for them to work with. Tartanz can be turned into a lovely surprise class!
