Spikey Starz

Spikey Starz Teaching Notes

*explain that this is a combination of techniques; firstly a free multisided log cabin in the belly and secondly a “cover corners” technique for the spikez, (covered a little differently in Cut Loose). Not everyone is experienced at both of these. Some may need prompts after they complete the first process and move to the second.

*the belly can make wonderful use of a print (e.g. pink circle on yellow print becomes a belly button especially if you use yellow print for spikez). An animal print works well too. Encourage them to have fun with it.

*the belly is versatile;
- change the number of sides covered,
- sparse or close coverage,
- no belly! (use the starz fabric instead)
- Use the belly already cut from the background fabric and you will have hollow spikey starz.

*emphasise placing/starting the spikez an inch in from the outer edges so they aren’t made blunt.

*the most difficult process for most is positioning the cut for the 5th spike onwards, they can’t visualisize where to cut and where to cover;
-If problems occur have them draw what they want with a chalk wheel (cut out from one marked line and use the other marked line as a stitching guide).
-Have them complete the top background before starting on the bottom background.
-Some students should be encouraged initially to create six spikez only (less time, less visualisation needed)

Spikey Starz Extra Settings Ideas

B.O.M/Class Ideas

THREE WEEK CLASS
Tartanz, Spikey Starz and a setting night for an excellent boy quilt. Great if using alternate blocks. Spikey Starz would have to be built to 10” with strips or borders.

FOUR WEEK CLASS
1. Spikey Starz, Slender Starz and Sawtooth Starz then a setting night.
2. Spikey Starz, Slender Starz and Moonz to continue the galaxy theme (as there is no Stargazey pattern for Moonz yet, think of incorporating an appliqué version or Drunkards Pathz units from Cut Loose followed by a setting night.
3. Spikey Starz, machine appliqué following an outer space theme (rockets, astronauts, UFO’s), then a setting night. The last night could be an embellishments/machine quilting night using great threads and add-ons.

B.O.M.
1. Spikey Starz, Slender Starz and Sawtooth Starz - two rows of each in different sizes - in a medallion setting.
2. Kitez, Planez and Spikey Starz in the quilt body with 6” Housez as a border.
