Pineapplez
Pineapplez Teaching Notes
*The lower half of the block is very easy to construct. There shouldn’t
be any problems in class. Encourage them to cut the corners off
in an irregular manner for the quirkiest pineapplez.
*The flesh can be bottom or top heavy - variety is the key.
*Pineapple fabric is very easy to obtain. Almost any yellow or
orange print should work. Even moving away from “realistic”
colours the distinctive shape will dominate. If you encourage students
to choose a print with a repeat you will only add to the effect.
Plaids can be cut on the bias, stripes look great cut horizontally
to suggest rings and any spotty design can suggest the ‘eyes’.
Open yours to the possibilities!
*I had planned for the flesh to be pieced in a diagonal nine-patchez
type of arrangement but with the variety of print fabrics available
found it unnecessary. If you would like to piece your flesh I suggest
the Cut Loose style of Stack, Slice, Switch and Sew with two fabrics
would be wonderful here.
*Some students will come unstuck with the leavez. They will not
be good at visualising the areas that will be covered by the leavez
fabric. Take time and care to explain the visualisation needed here.
Suggest marking the desired outcome with a chalk wheel or other
marker if all else fails.
*The leavez section is designed to meet approximately with the
flesh. Do not let the students panic about lack of perfection. If
they can tell it is a pineapple from five paces the design is working.
*I have designed the block with the pineapple sitting on the edge
of the block. If you would like the pineapple to float it is not
as simple as adding a lower background as the leavez will be chopped.
I suggest you make the lower sized block and add borders as necessary.
