Leavez

Leavez Teaching Notes

*I usually find it necessary to demo either the ‘straight’ or the ‘on point’ blocks initially, not both. Most students understand the second version very easily and can continue alone.

*These blocks are sized quite tight. If the Leavez are cut larger they escape block size. If care is not taken when placing the backgrounds the block may not reach block size. The hardest part of making a Leavez block is finding the correct mix of trimming and background placement.

*Depending on how the Leavez are trimmed along the way, some people have trouble placing the last background pieces in position to make block size. Usually it is the last background piece’s placement only that causes the problem - in which case have the student, in future, place the block on the board within block size lines and show them that there may be a better placement. The other easy option is to have them cut the last background pieces (corners or sides) a little larger!

*I have allowed very little space on the Leavez for the initial ‘shaping’ trim.
Have students initially only cut the corners off the triangles/leavez when trimming and shaping. Sometimes I find students end up with Bonsai blocks in their initial overzealous trimming - a sure way not to end up with block size!

*Mixing straight and on point blocks on a stalk works very well as does using different block sizes. Just be prepared to add fillers.

*If the straight blocks are used upright they can also work as ‘bushez’. They would work especially well on a horizon line

*Whilst Leavez work beautifully on their own, they seem made for combining with other blocks for garden themes in particular.
