Hatz
Hatz Teaching Notes
*These are just about the easiest blocks around! Yes, I know, so
are Daisiez and Handbagz and .....! The basic design is simple and
quick to make, then the permutations of style and embellishment
become simply limitless.
*My patterns are written with the width of a piece written first
and the height second. Having the body placed incorrectly will make
the block too narrow and the resulting hat will be reminiscent of
a Dr Seuss model.
*Don’t let students obsess about getting a perfect connection
between the body and the brim. Working at joining odd angles presents
problems for many students. Following my instructions will get them
close to joining. Careful trimming, keeping an eye on where the
seam will be, helps. If perfection is sought it can be achieved
but students are probably in the wrong class!
*My Hatz were made on stands but the cutting guide gives measurements
for a square block where the Hatz float. Have student think through
how their Hatz need to be placed in their project before cutting
out the backgrounds - it may be that the background top and bottom
are not needed.
*Hatz blocks, like Cuppaz, can be stacked. Use the overlap cut
I often use -mentioned in all Samplerz and the Cuppaz pattern -
it is essentially an overlap of one or both blocks, with a slice
made in an appropriate position. The resulting seam is skewed but
both are skewed at the same angle making them easy to join.
*You may want to demonstrate how to stack Hatz, how to make Hat
Standz and how to make ribbonz, rosez and bowz. I usually do this
only if demand warrants it. I do however always demonstrate how
to make the Hatbandz.
*I have set the Hatbandz up as a flip and sew process and despite
demonstrating this it is surprising how many students automatically
forget this and stitch it straight on to the bottom edge of the
body. If you find this problem occurs too often have the students
trim off the hatband space first and sew the Hatbandz on as they
are trying to!
* My bowz and rosez are simply held on with safety pins so that
they can be changed around at whim.
