Daisiez Teaching Notes
*This is one of the easiest Stargazey blocks - both to stitch and
teach. Students very quickly understand the logic of the way it
is constructed. Often I hear the comment, “that is so easy,
why didn’t I think of that myself?”
*The ease of the process means that it is great for beginners
or children - a great introduction to rotary cutting, using the
sewing machine or simply an introduction to Stargazey style.
*I like to introduce perspective in the daisiez, that is, I often
keep the shorter tapers at one side. This can be problematic as
occasionally this side may not make block width - keep an eye on
this.
*Encourage students to vary the shape of the centre. Design wise,
if it is not square it looks better.
*Working with the bias edges of the background can cause the Daisiez
to turn into volcanoes! After slicing through the background, one
edge will be straight and the other will be curved. A slight trim
of the offending edge - which will not be straight - will solve
the problem almost magically!
If the problem reoccurs in the next block check that the student
can sew a straight seam!
*On the bigger blocks it sometimes happens that tiny parts of
early petals can be seen near the centres. It is an unavoidable
occurrence that is just a part of this easy way of working. I very
rarely remember to mention it but occasionally observant students
will pick it up.
*Being quick to make and very graphic, these blocks are great
as fillers used with other Stargazey blocks.
