Catz
Catz Teaching Notes
*To make attractive Catz the sides of the face need to be trimmed
at an angle tapering up. Square faced catz tend to look more like
dogz.
*I have kept the trimming light in this pattern. Some students’
Catz will not make block size if they trim too enthusiastically.
If they are repeatedly short have them add a little more to the
background pieces, e.g. 1/2” around the edges.
*The earz and the chinz are the same shape but I treated them
differently.
The earz were attached using flip and sew/covering corners methods
so they would not be cut too small. The chins are better trimmed
by eye to create a balanced shape. If using two techniques is confusing
for some, let them choose which of the techniques works best for
them.
*As with most of my blocks, they are kept simple in design so
that they are easily ‘personalised’. Here it is very
important to develop the catz’ character.
Eyez, whiskerz and mouthz can be added in any technique and in
any style.
*Keep a pigma pen handy for those who want instant completion
- in fact fabric paints may be just the thing to add markings and
features.
*I often use ‘double buttons’ in quilts for adding
colour - a small one on a big one. Double buttons here will simulate
pupils and add life.
*Eyez again. Having a square each of black and yellow solids with
a fusible backing prepared for class will endear you to those who
want instant completion!
* Consider making furry catz - from flannel, polar fleece or even
a light fake fur.
* The collarz are a great place for dressing up the catz. Ribbons,
bowz and name tags come to mind straight away.
*Fabric choices aren’t limited to realism. Already I have
had adventurous students with pink and aqua felines.
