Beez & Hivez

Beez & Hivez Teaching Notes
*block size can be a problem, bee height only - get students to measure
the tail before joining to the body and head, (allowing for seams),
to make sure it doesnt escape - trim off more around the waist
if needed
*emphasise that small seams may be necessary on the 4 and
perhaps 6 beez
*suggest students make their initial samples in the 8 or
10 sizes - much easier to manipulate
*the background triangles on the beez can go into hiding when the
beez sides are trimmed and stitched to the wingz. I always have
the finished, rounded bee shape in my mind and work to create this
shape. If a student has repeated problems visualising where the
seams will work best have them draw on the seam line with a chalk
wheel before stitching on the triangles.
*if the bee body continually loses definition and looks blocky
the body must be trimmed and checked so that the triangle shapers
are used to better advantage - again a chalk wheel/charcoal marker
may be necessary
*putting on the wings - estimate roughly only the juncture of the
body and wings - dont plan on perfection
*pressing can be difficult if the seams are all pushed under, although
they look better this way, let them iron away from the points if
it suits
*the hivez can be a bit blocky also if the sides are continually
kept parallel. I shape some right, some left, some narrow at the
base and some wider at the base
