Framed Squarez #1 - Snuggly Squarez Instructions

This pattern was first published in The Keepsake Quilter Newsletter, Spring 2002. It is a simple project that would also be great made using the newer Happy Hippiez flannels, Plush Positivez or any flat collection.

QUILT SIZE: 54” x 54” (137cm x 137cm)
BLOCK SIZE: 6”

General Instructions

1. Using my methods, cutting doesn’t have to be accurate until the final squaring up process. You can cut a bit bigger and a bit crooked when you see the ‘ish’ measurement.
2. I made three different sizes of centre squarez. You may make your blocks using all one size centre or a different mixture from mine.
3. If you want a bigger or smaller quilt you need to allow cutting of 3 blocks per 1/4 yd cut.
4. I prefer to press the seams under the centre squarez to suit the way I quilt. I press after sewing every seam.

CUTTING A SMALL CENTRE BLOCK

Cutting a Block

Blocks are 6” finished, 81 blocks are needed.
I made 45 ‘small centre’ blocks
I made 20 ‘medium centre’ blocks
I made 16 ‘large centre’ blocks

1. Cut a 3”ish centre square from focus fabric.
2. Cut two 3”ish side squares from background fabric.
3. Cut two 3” x 7 1/2”ish edge rectangles from background fabric.

CUTTING A MEDIUM CENTRE BLOCK
1. Cut a 4”ish centre square from focus fabric.
2. Cut two 2 1/2” X 4”ish side pieces from background fabric.
3. Cut two 2 1/2” x 7 1/2”ish edge rectangles from background fabric.

CUTTING A LARGE CENTRE BLOCK
1. Cut a 5”ish centre square from focus fabric.
2. Cut two 2” X 5”ish side pieces from background fabric.
3. Cut two 2” x 7 1/2”ish edge rectangles from background fabric.

Piecing a Block

1. Lightly trim the centre square to the
shape you require. Crooked is good!

2. Stitch the two side squares to opposite
sides of the centre square.

3. Trim to straighten the edges.
Tapering is good!

4. Stitch on the edge rectangles.

5. Trim to the unfinished block
size of 6 1/2”.

Joining the Blocks

Stitch the blocks together to make nine rows each containing 9 blocks.
Mine were arranged in color areas, yours could be random and scrappy or ordered in rows of like color.

Sandwich and back the quilt top.

Quilting

I machine quilted in my usual style in the ditch around the edges of the blocks and the centre squarez.
I free quilted various double-stitched curls, spikes and scrolls in the backgrounds.

Binding

I cut 2” cut strips, folded in half as my preferred binding.
