Framed Squarez #2 - More than a yard of melodiez
QUILT SIZE: 40 1/2” x 40 1/2” (103cm x 103cm)
BLOCK SIZE: 5 1/2”

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Using my methods cutting doesn’t have to be accurate
until the final squaring up process. You can cut a bit bigger and
a bit crooked when you see the ‘ish’ measurement.
2. I prefer to press the seams under the centre squarez to suit
the way I quilt. I press after sewing every seam.
CUTTING A BLOCK
Blocks are 5 1/2” finished, 25 blocks are needed.
For each;
1. Cut a 4”ish centre square from block centre fabric.
2. Cut two 2” x 4”ish side strips from block background
fabric.
3. Cut two 2” x 7”ish top/bottom strips from the same
background fabric.
PIECING A BLOCK
1. Lightly trim the centre square to the shape you require.
Crooked is good!
2. Stitch the two side strips to opposite sides of the centre square.
3. Trim to straighten the top/bottom edges. Tapering is good!
4. Stitch on the top/bottom strips.
5. Trim to the unfinished block size of 6”.
JOINING THE BLOCKS
I set the blocks on point and needed triangles to fill the
gaps.
Cut nine 7” squares. Cut these perfectly!
Cut all in half, corner to corner.
I cut extra to add variety.
Arrange the blocks on point, four rows of four filled with three
rows of three in between - or as per the photo!
Fill in the side gaps with the appropriate triangles.
Cut four of leftover triangle halves in half again to fill the corner
gaps.
Again I went for variety.
Stitch the blocks and triangles together in diagonal rows starting
with a longest ‘corner-to-corner’ row.
Stitch the rows together. The edge and corner triangles should be
a little larger than needed.
Trim all around the edges, a quarter inch out from the blocks’
points.
INNER BORDER
Cut two sides 1 1/4” x 31 1/2”, one from each colour.
Stitch on.
Cut a top and bottom 1 1/4” x 33”, one from each colour.
Stitch on.
OUTER BORDER
Cut four lengths 4” x 36 1/2”, two from each colour.
These borders are stitched on with a partial seam to create balance
without mitring.
To do this;
1. Pin on the first outer border with the bottom end level with
the end corner of the quilt. The top edge will be overhanging the
quilt. Stitch, starting from approximately 6” in from this
top edge of the quilt.
2. Pin and stitch on the second outer border. This time the top
and bottom edges should fit sweetly.
3. Pin and stitch on the third and fourth outer borders sweetly
as before.
4. Finish by pinning and stitching the top starting edge of the
first outer border.
Sandwich the quilt.
QUILTING
I machine quilted in my usual style in the ditch around the
edges of the blocks and the centre squarez and borders.
I free quilted various double-stitched lines in the block backgrounds.
I quilted large half daisies to sit in the edge triangles.
The outer borders were then stitched to echo the fabric design.
BINDING
I cut 2”strips, folded in half as my preferred binding.
