From Baltimore to Freo: Two Small Projects

We made these as class samples.
They not only introduce students to the process but also to the functionality of raw edged reverse applique.

From Baltimore to Freo Cushion

Cushion size
15” (38cm) square - uses a 16” (40cm) cushion insert.

Fabric Requirements
Top Layer - 16” square
Scalloped Edge - 1/2yd (50cm)
Cushion Backing - 1/3yd (35cm)
Secret Layer - 3” x bolt width of six fabrics
Batting - 16” x 37”
Fusible Web - 14” square

The Block
Make up a Baltimore block as per pp. 67-9 following the process from Step 1 to 7 omitting the backing of the block in Step 1.
Our Reverse Applique was executed with two colours of rayon thread in a swirly freehand pattern. Four buttons gave the design focus.
Trim the block to 15” square.

The Backing
Cut two cushion backings each 15” x 12“.
Turn the edges of each 1/2” along a longer side. Turn the raw edge under again to meet the fold and stitch each to hold.

The Scalloped Edging

Click here to print out full size templates [edging part 1] [edging part 2]
Join the two templates together to form the edging as above.

1. Cut eight pieces of fabric 21” x 4”.
Cut four pieces of batting 21” x 4”.
Sandwich: batting first, then layer the two fabrics on top, right sides face together.

2. Mark the template outline of the scalloped edging to the top fabric (the back of it).
Stitch along the marked line with a small stitch leaving the length open.
Trim leaving a 1/4” allowance all around.
Snip seam allowances to accommodate curves and thin down points.

3. Layer all the pieces keeping outer edges aligned;
Cushion front face up.
A scallop centred along each side with scallops facing inwards and pinned to keep away from the seam.
Cushion backings face down and overlapping.
Stitch the layers together with a ‘large’ 1/4” seam. A walking foot may be handy here.
Clip the corners and turn the cushion face out.

From Baltimore to Freo Table Mat

Our sample block was changed into a table mat as we went along but I have written the instructions showing a planned project order. If you want to add size to a small sample block simply zigzag on extra batting, stitch on extra top layer, and place in extra secret fabric. Back and quilt once the applique is complete.

Table mat size
25” x 15 1/2” (65cm x 40cm)

Fabric Requirements
Top Layer - one 16” square + two pieces 6” x 16”
Backing - 27” x 17”
Binding - 1/4yd (25cm)
Secret Layer - 3” x bolt width of six fabrics
Batting - 27” x 17”
Fusible Web - one piece 14” square + two pieces 4” x 10”

Top Layer
Stitch the small pieces to each side of the square.

Make up a Baltimore block as per pp. 67-9 following the process from Step 1 to 7
*Omit the backing of the block in Step 1.
*Draw/trace the knife and fork templates and follow the same procedures as for the central wreath design in trimming/ironing/secret layer/stitching.
*Our Reverse Applique was executed with black polyester thread and a machine buttonhole stitch.

Finishing
Lay the batting/secret layer/top layer sandwich on the backing.
