Wedding Ringz

Instructions

We made two quilts using Black & Whitez. One we kept ‘nude’, the other we coloured with fabric paints. Their fabric requirements differ slightly.
Fabric paints, dyes, crayons or pencils can be used to colour these fabrics.
We used Pebeo Setacolor Transparent fabric paints #22, 49, 24, 18, 26, & 29. They were painted on after the wedges were pieced. The wedges were then trimmed to eradicate the white edges before piecing in the blocks.

THE BLOCKS
 Make forty-eight blocks using the instructions on p83 of Cut Loose Quilts by Jan Mullen.

a simplified version follows;

Cutting a Wedding Ring Cornerz Unit
 For each block cut a 9 1/2"-ish square from background fabric.
Cut strips of wedge fabric, 3 1/2"-ish wide and the length you desire. I suggest that you cut a enough to make a few blocks and cut and make more as needed.
Cut into wedges with tops of 3 1/2"-ish and bases 2 1/2"-ish.
I used between four and seven wedges per block, which varied the look of each curve.

Piecing a Wedding Ring Cornerz Unit
1. Lay the background square on the cutting mat, right side up.
2. Sew the wedges together, varying the angles at which they are placed, till they are long enough to fill in the curve that you anticipate cutting. You may have to trim the wedges to a better shape as you go.
3. Freehand trim the inner and outer curves of the pieced wedges lightly, with a rotary cutter, to a nice even curve.
4. Place the pieced wedges against the background and, using the pieced wedges as a template, slice the background to match the outer curve.
5. Trim the side edges of the pieced wedges to line up with the background sides.
6. Mark the centres with a chalk wheel. Place these pieces, right sides together, align and pin the centres. Fan out the background piece so the raw edges align comfortably with the wedges outer curve. Pin 1/2"-ish in from the edges. Smooth the area between these two pins, then pin in between them on both sides.
Stitch the pieces with the background piece face up at the machine so you can ease out folds.
7. Trim the background corner to exactly echo the inner curve of the pieced wedges.
8. Mark the centres and pin as before, being careful not to stretch the stitching. You may even choose to stay-stitch this wedge edge. It is not necessary to keep the outer edges aligned.
Stitch.
9. Trim to unfinished block size, 8 1/2" square.

STITCHING THE BLOCKS
 Arrange the blocks in a pleasing six by eight set. Stitch together.

INNER BORDER
 Cut and join fabric to make;
Two sides, 1 1/2” x 64 1/2”. Stitch on.
A top and bottom 1 1/2” x 50 1/2”. Stitch on.

OUTER BORDER
 Cut and join fabric to make;
Two sides, 3 1/2” x 66 1/2”. Stitch on.
A top and bottom 3 1/2” x 56 1/2”. Stitch on.

TO FINISH
 The borders and ringz were ditch stitched. The inside of the ringz were filled with radiating patterns. The outside of the ringz were framed with ‘petals’ and the backgrounds were filled with curls. All were quilted freehand.

Kit Requirements

We have allowed for easy in-store cutting, inaccurate customer cutting, fabric shrinkage and for some flexible fabric usage.
