Slender Starz

Due to hot demand by star lovers I present you with “Slender Starz”. In my usual Stargazey style there are no templates, just an unusual technique of slicing, covering corners, and stitching the background back together. Your first attempt will not be speedy, but no need to panic, you will be led through this amazing process step by step.

I’ve designed this block in four sizes 5”, 6”, 8” and 10” so that you may mix and match. Make a cot quilt with the 5”, make a queen size of the 10” and border it with the 6” blocks perhaps. You can even make it to look just like my sample with it’s freeform lattice border - another case of slicing and restitching.

Simply stunning in two colours or wonderfully wild if you mix up the background and star fabrics. Enjoy making these starz dance!

Spikey Starz

I know you love making starz as much as me, so now let me introduce you to the newest addition to the Stargazey galaxy.

Spikey Starz blocks can be made in three different sizes for your quilt designing ease, but the real bonus of these blocks is that their look may be varied with the number of spikez stitched. With six, seven, or eight star arms, each of these spikey creatures is definitely unique.

Techniques used in their making are a combination of my favourite ways of cutting and stitching - nothing difficult, just slicing freely into a rough cut background, covering corners, then stitching the newly made star arms back together. Be warned though, they like to be introduced to the skies at a slow and gentle pace.

From a simple repeat block quilt in one size for a newborn, to an intricate multi-sized arrangement for the astronomy loving teenager, a quilt with these spiky blocks is sure to shine.

Teapotz

We have long needed a companion to the very popular Cuppaz - here it is! I had a few design dilemmas with this one as teapots come in all shapes and sizes and I had ideas for quite a few. My decision was to keep them contained within a square, if I had chosen a traditionally rounded teapot the blocks would have been rectangular and therefore harder to join together as a top.

Techniques are of the usual Stargazey easy cutting and stitching variety, giving each block its crooked individuality. Every piece is cut simply from a square or rectangle.

Teapotz can be made in three block sizes; 6”, 8” and 10” to tie in with the Cuppaz proportions. In my sample I used all three sizes in a medallion setting, but for my next teapotz foray I will definitely combine them with my Cuppaz pattern!

Treez

If it’s an interesting Christmas you want this year why not start with lots of Treez just waiting to be decorated? With trimmings and embellishments this could become your perfect Christmas decoration.

Made easily and quickly in the usual offbeat Stargazey style, as usual there will be lots of easy cutting and sewing, no foundations or templates in sight. No need to be exact working this way.

Make the treez any height you like. Have them tall and straight, leaning precariously, or simply short and stumpy. I give you 4”, 6” and 8” width tree groupings to choose from, and the recipe for making a single feature block as well, enabling you to make a multi sized forest. Make your quilt any size or setting.

Colourings can be neutrals and forest greens, could reflect the seasons, (think snow, falling leaves, bright sun and rainy days) or with dark backgrounds your pines could be stunningly silhouetted against the night sky.

Pineapplez

Pineapples.

Are you thinking umbrella garnished drinks by the pool or a healthy summery dose of Vitamin C? Is it Carmen Miranda or a laden fruit bowl? Whatever your intention for this sweet but spikey fruit, making them in fabric will have you feeling just as happy.

Pineapplez can be made in four sizes; 4”, 6”, 8” and 10”. The blocks are made in two parts with the bottom a piece of cake to make. The spikey leavez section takes a little longer to come together but is also easily conquered using my ‘cover corners’ technique.

Pineapple fabric is easy enough to find - any yellow with a grid or repeat design should work if you desire realism. The 4” version also works well as a strawberry!

Treat yourself to a touch of the tropics - with or without the umbrella!

OOOPs!
when making the sample quilt, trim the nine-patchez blocks to 6" square not 5 1/2" as stated.

Xmas Treez

Where would Christmas be without a tree and presents? These images convey the wonderful joys of giving and receiving - a big part of the season’s spirit.
For those a little jaded with the traditional red and green colouration I’ve stitched quirky hot pink Xmas Treez wrapped happily in golden tinsel. The blocks are made as rectangles, 4” x 8”, 6” x 12”, and 8” x 16” - with their length double their width. They could be embellished with buttons, beads and charms in an overblown style if that suits.
The Prezziez block adds to the theme. Even easier than the Xmas Treez to piece, if that is possible, these 4”, 6” and 8” blocks are also designed to be played with. Consider adding name tags, button and bead embellishment or real ribbons.
Greet the season with creative cheer!
