Whilst still in the midst of builders and surrounded by stuff,
the studio quietly hums away. Most of my time of late has been
taken up on the computer, re-editing and re-formatting various
patterns and notes. I beaver away and bide my time until I can
'open the doors' again and finish off the new webpage. The
sewing machine has been rather neglected....
February 1, 2008
We have finally moved the studio next door. That means a big
YIPPEE! We love the view from upstairs across the roads and train line,
through the palms to the sea, ships and Rottnest Island. I call this
scenario 'toy town' and although not a traditionally beautiful foreground,
the activity is mesmerizing. Our computer table now faces this large
window so it is a bit hard to concentrate. Through our skylight windows
we see the iconic Dingo flour factory. Am I happy???? Hard not to be!
There is still a plenty to be done in here though before we can
call it finished but I hope to have shelves filled and the sewing
machine fired up after next week. The mess and noise of
renovation continues next door as we convert the old studio into
our home - meantime we continue our 'camping holiday' in the
new studio.
For the locals - I won't be putting out a studio class list for
quite a while. The most likely scenario will be mid year when the
builders have packed up. If you are happy to brave the chaos of
builders you are welcome to make and appointment (ring
or email) to visit for supplies of fabric, patterns etc or for
PRIVATE lessons or casual studio sessions.
ATC's are still popular. For those who would like to

JAN MULLEN AND STARGAZEY QUILTS
With a B.Ed Art/craft majoring in Textiles and Sculpture my creative
life could have taken me down many paths. For twelve years
though, I have reveled in being a part of the Quilting Industry.
Know to many under my business name “Stargazey” I have spent the
years developing contemporary piecing and applique techniques in my distinctive
bright and crooked style. Starting with teaching classes locally, demand for
patterns came quickly and commercial pattern production commenced in 1996.
The same love of writing has produced three books published by C&T (USA)
- “Cut Loose Quilts”, “Reverse Applique With No Brakez” and “Free & Eazy
Circles". Each book gave me the chance to explore techniques in detail and
to introduce others to less structured approaches to quilt making.
Designing fabrics for Marcus Brothers though, is probably what I am best known
for. With twenty-one collections produced to date, my colourful and bold style
is easily recognizable.
Teaching, the thing that started me off in this industry, has kept me traveling.
Whilst most trips are to the USA, promoting new product and often ‘teaching
the teachers’, travel elsewhere has importantly given me great experiences,
wonderful students and great friendships. Educating and trying to inspire others
is simply an undeniable part of my being.
Of late I am taking time to seek fresh challenges and ways of working.
Amidst this diversification in and out of textiles I can’t
help but remain tied closely to patchwork and quilt making.
