Blocks:
Make twenty Beggar Block Butterfliez according to the pattern in
Cut Loose.
(pp 86-8), including the backgrounds for each block
and borders for each block. This will take them to the
required 10 1/2.
Each block has:
- fuzz fabric for the background,
- a contrast colour for wingz made of the feature
creature, spotz or the wingz swirl
fabric. Cut one butterfliez rectangle only, slice twice
and use the centre section as the template for cutting the
body. (see p23, using a cut piece as a template)
Discard the original centre section.
- the same contrast color stripez for the body
- the same contrast color feature creature and
wingz swirl fabric for two sides of the block
borders

Row 1 has orange backgrounds with wingz, body and borders in each
of the other four colourways.
Row 2 has yellow backgrounds with wingz, body and borders in each
of the other four colourways.
Row 3 has red backgrounds with wingz, body and borders in each of
the other four colourways.
Row 4 has green backgrounds with wingz, body and borders in each
of the other four colourways.
Row 5 has blue backgrounds with wingz, body and borders in each
of the other four colourways.
Arrange the blocks to balance color.
Stitch together.
Inner Borders:
Cut and join strips of black fuzz fabric to make;
Two sides 1 1/2 x 50 1/2. Stitch on.
A top and a bottom 1 1/2 x 42 1/2. Stitch on.
Outer Borders:
Working in five colour groups you will need to cut each of the five
prints in each of the five colourways.
Cut each of the twenty-five fabrics, 3 1/2 x 13 1/2.
Stack them in color groups all face up. Slice four times.
Switch and Sew them back together.
Arrange in position, there will be some leftover blocks initially.
For each side:
Trim six blocks for the centre, 3 1/2 x 10 1/2.
Trim/use four for the top & bottom sides, 3 1/2 x 11 1/2.
Stitch the side blocks together. Stitch on.
For the top and the bottom:
Trim four blocks for the centre, 3 1/2 x 10 1/2.
Use the leftover blocks to add length to the four corners - and
then trim the blocks to 3 1/2 x 14 1/2.
Stitch the top and bottom blocks together. Stitch on.
Quilting/Finishing:
Sandwich.
With the walking foot on I machine quilted in the ditch of the inner
border and between the blocks. Switching to the quilting foot I
freehand machine quilted in the ditch around the butterfliez, the
bodiez and the background/block border ditch. Again I freehand quilted
curls and swirls in the block backgrounds, and then finished the
borders with little ladybirds, frogs, butterfliez, bees and dragonflies.
I used a heavy weight black cotton to draw on curly
antennae to complete these happy creatures, then used various stripez
to tie it all together.
